You cannot attach pictures here, but you can use an outside free hosting account like Photobucket.

This involves using artificial, or fake, limit values to force the "conditional formatting" to kick in. Just make sure that you supply values that are far lower and higher than anything that you realistically expect to see in regular data.
You can't use this approach for too many levels practically, but you might be OK for what you've described.
I considered playing with limit values, but wasn't sure exactly how to use them. That did the trick, so thank you for your samples.
I also considered the Photobucket idea for posting links to images. Thanks for confirming that my instincts were headed in the right direction, on both counts.
