    CREATING TEMPLATE FOR RPRT SUMMARY

      I AM A NEW USER ( VER.7 )

      MY PROBLEM IS THAT MY BOSS WANTS ME TO SET UP A TEMPLATE TO CAPTURE THE SUMMARY PAGE OF A MONTHLY REPORT. THE FIRST COLUMN IS TEXT, AND THE REMAINING 9 COLUMNS ARE NUMERIC. HOWEVER THE ENTIRE SUMMARY IS APPROXIMATELY 3O LINES.

          It all depends on what the data are and what your boss wants from the capture.

           

          If he just wants the 30 lines captured exactly as they are and exported or copied somewhere else all you need to do is set up a template that only captures lines on the summary page and then a single field for the whole width of the summary to capture all the text.

           

          If the text is to be analysed and grouped in some way the next question would be - What are the columns? Are they consistent in width - say all numeric values, or are some of them dates, some values, some codes and so on?

           

          If they are consistent in terms of width and data type you should be able to use the Multi Column Region facility successfully. If they are not so consistent you would need to look for more traditional ways to extract.

           

          Is there any chance of posting a sample of the format of the report to the forum? It is much easier to make suggestions after viewing the layout and content type. Disguise the data if necessary but it is best not to change the nature of the data. So a date field should be presented as a valid date not mm/dd/yyyy for example. That way we can cut and paste the sample and experiment without having to take time to recreate the data.

              What do you need to extract in the end.?  30 lines formatted just like it is above or a table of data based on the columns displayed?

               

              If you want to take the data out of the columns - are the columns all the same width and in fixed positions across the page? Do you have version 7 Standard or Pro?

                  Hi Al,

                   

                  OK, the simple thing to do is pick the entire 30 lines of the summary as your sample fot the template and for each row create a single field for the full width of the report.

                   

                  Providing that you can uniquely identify the first line of the summary for a trap that will ONLY trap the summary lines that is all you need to do as far as I can see.

                   

                  If necessary (and assuming the first line is consistent) just use as much of the

                  [font="courier"]============  C U R R E N T   M O N T H    A M O U N T S   ================= REFUNDS[/font][/quote]as you need - the entire header line if necessary.

                   

                  If that is not unique you will need to look for something that is. I can't suggest much at them moment as I don't know what the detail dsection of the report looks like. Hopefully what you have here will work anyway!

                   

                  Once you have satisified your boss's requirements you could look at using some of the powerful Monarch features to turn the data in the summary into real knowledge!  Even better, if the summary is just a presentation of the detail in the rest of the report, get Monarch to use the detail to come up with a few alternative versions of the summary using the detail data as the source.

                  Edit to add: - make sure the output uses a FIXED WIDTH FONT - fixedsys for example - so that the spacing across the rows is retained.
