Usually when you have a floating trap situation, but that tool just doesn't work, you're looking at more of a slice and dice type of solution.
Can you post a sample of the report with any confidential data x'd out?
Just to add to Data Kruncher's comment - are you dealing with a 'true' report with variable column widths or is it more of a file dump with spaces 9or something) between the fields? Have you looked at the possibility of opening it as a database? A long shot but worth eliminating from the ides list if you have already tried it.
I worked with Gerald yesterday on a solution which capitalized on regular pipe characters "|" separating the fields within his reports.
His challenge involved two reports which have the same fields, but varying widths for some fields. I think we've resolved his modeling problem.
I'll let Gerald elaborte if he so chooses. Gerald?
The database option was the first that I explored due to the fact that the report generator allows a dump into excel. While this option worked, I wanted to find the most efficient way to manipulate the data. Data Kruncher came up with an ingenious idea of using the pipe characters to separate identify column widths. He has resolved the modeling problem.
