If the type of field is important is it reasonable to assume you want to export it and it must be numeric for export?
If so it may be that you should consider the
Options > Export and Clipboard > Text Files
and then the tick box for padding the export of numeric fields with zeros but noting that it will also drop the decimal point and use trailing negatives.
The most appropriate method is rather dependent on the purpose you have for the field, though in effect the result will be much the same.
